How Long Does an Insurance Claim Take?

We know that drivers would like a smooth experience when filing an auto insurance claim. Understanding the typical timeline and knowing how to help move things along can make a big difference.

Timeline of an Insurance Claim

The time it takes to resolve an auto insurance claim can vary based on your situation. Generally, here’s what you can expect:

  • Initial reporting: Once you report your claim, your insurer will assign a claims adjuster, usually within a few days.
  • Investigation: The adjuster reviews the details, inspects vehicle damage and may request additional information. This step can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on the complexity of the claim.
  • Decision and payment: Insurers are generally required to accept or reject a claim within 15 business days after receiving all necessary information. If approved, payment is typically issued within five business days.

In straightforward cases, the entire process may be completed in two to three weeks. More complex claims, such as those involving injuries or disputes, may take longer.

Tips to Speed Up Your Claim

While some factors are out of your control, there are steps you can take to help your claim move faster:

  • Notify your insurer as soon as possible after an accident.
  • Share all relevant details, including photos, police reports and contact information of all parties involved.
  • Answer any questions from your claims adjuster and provide requested documents without delay.
  • Keep records of all communications and paperwork related to your claim.
  • If you haven’t heard back within a reasonable time, reach out to your adjuster for an update.
